The board of directors of the Maine Merchants Association recently chose Acadia Corporation of Bar Harbor, ME, as its 2009 Merchant of the Year. The award will be presented at the Maine Merchants Association 76th annual meeting on October 22th at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland, ME.
Although a number of qualified merchants were considered, Acadia Corporation was chosen because of its commitment to Maine, a mission to “serve visitors to Acadia National Park” and for outstanding work in the community.
The Merchant of the Year Award has three main criteria: continued growth in employees or sales; commitment of company resources to community projects; and creation of a positive work environment for all employees. Acadia Corporation exceeded the criteria on all counts.
The Acadia Corporation operates the Jordan Pond House Restaurant and retail shops at Jordan Pond House, on the summit of Cadillac Mountain, and at Thunder Hole in Acadia under contract with the National Park Service. The company also operates four retail stores in downtown Bar Harbor, known collectively as The Acadia Shops of Bar Harbor.
The Acadia Corporation, founded in 1932, accomplishes their mission by providing friendly and courteous service, traditional food service and quality merchandise. Acadia Corporation sets the tone for all employees with their dedication to community service. Whether serving on volunteer boards, fulfilling a long-standing commitment to the Friends of Acadia or tirelessly promoting “MaineCrafted” products, Acadia Corporation is a leader to the merchant community.
“Acadia Corporation is a role model for other companies in Maine. I am very impressed with their commitment to Maine-made products and recognize the importance of being a leader in the Bar Harbor region,” stated Curtis Picard, Executive Director of the Maine Merchants Association.
David
Woodside, Acadia Corporation president, remarked, “Acadia Corporation is very
excited about being nominated as the 2009 Maine Merchant of the Year. Our employees work very hard to make the
company a success and having the company recognized for its solid commitment to
customers, to the community, the environment, and its employees is important,
especially during challenging times. Acadia also gratefully recognizes and
thanks its customers, for without them, winning awards like this wouldn’t be
possible.”
The Maine Merchants Association has presented the annual Merchant of the Year Award since 1980. Other winners include Johnny’s Selected Seeds, Stonewall Kitchen (2007), Hammond Lumber Company (2006), and Indian Hill Trading Post (2005). The award will be presented on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at the Maine Merchants Association Annual Meeting at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland, ME.
