An Act To Create the Children's Wireless Protection Act

This is a Maine Merchants Success Story.

FILED UNDER: General Business | Defeated | 2010

Summary

Representative Boland of Sanford would require a warning to be placed in the packaging of all cellular phones sold for use in Maine, warning of the alleged danger of brain cancer.

Position

Maine Merchants Association testified in opposition. Our concern is that any labeling or notification requirement would likely fall to the Maine-based retailer.

UPDATE 3-26-10: Both the House and Senate accepted the Majority Ought Not To Pass report. The bill is dead.

UPDATE 3-9-10: A majority of the committee supported an ought-not-to-pass motion and asked a letter be sent to the head of Maine CDC to provide better information regarding the existing studies of the devices. A minority report is asking the cell phone industry to come up with some undefined education campaign regarding cell phones and RF.

It is unsure how the bill will be addressed in the House and Senate.
